Make a start

One step at a time.

4 steps

Start with the synthetic worked example or other non-sensitive inputs. Run one prompt at a time in your chosen AI tool. Replace any bracketed placeholders with the requested material, check each reply, and supply the source or earlier outputs that step needs. Paste them again if the tool lacks that context.

Set up the worked example

Open

Open a new conversation in a text AI assistant. Keep this guide beside it and a document editor available for saving the checked excerpt. Start with the fictional CV; you do not need to upload a real CV or contact details.

Add the sample

In step 1, replace [paste] under SOURCE CV with everything from ‘Synthetic source CV:’ through ‘No team management, dedicated project-management software, budget ownership or numerical performance improvements are documented.’ Replace the second [paste], under JOB DESCRIPTION, with the remaining text from ‘Synthetic job description: Project Coordinator.’ through ‘Requested output: a short profile and three experience bullets.’ Both are in ‘The starting point’ (Synthetic input). Send each step prompt separately in the same chat and check the reply before continuing. Steps 2–4 use the source and draft already in that conversation. ‘The intended result’ (Illustrative output) is a worked answer for comparison, not more CV evidence to paste.

Start with the synthetic example, then adapt each prompt to your task.

01

Map the role to your evidence

Use the job description as a relevance filter, not as a source of skills to copy into your CV.

Your starting prompt
Compare the source CV with the job description. For each role requirement, quote matching evidence from the CV or mark "not evidenced". Distinguish direct experience from possible transferable experience. Never turn the employer's requested skill into a claim about me.

SOURCE CV:
[paste]

JOB DESCRIPTION:
[paste]
Expect

A requirement-by-requirement list, with a quoted CV phrase or ‘not evidenced’ beside each item. The four responsibilities have source support; dedicated project-management software is a preferred skill with no supplied evidence.

Check

Find the support for queries, task records, status updates and deadline conflicts in the original CV. A shared spreadsheet must not become experience with a dedicated project-management product. The job advert describes what the employer wants, not what the fictional applicant has done.

If it differs

If an advertised skill appears as a CV fact, quote the missing-evidence sentence and ask for a corrected mapping. If the AI asks for the CV or advert, check that you replaced both [paste] placeholders with the right sections.

02

Rewrite the strongest relevant material

Make the wording clearer and reorder it for relevance. Preserve job titles, dates and the scale of your responsibility.

Your starting prompt
Write a short profile and three relevant experience bullets using only supported facts from the source CV. Preserve exact job titles, employers and dates. Do not add metrics, certifications, tools, leadership duties or results that are absent. Use concrete, plain language rather than generic praise.
Expect

A short profile and exactly three experience bullets. Wording can change, but the role remains Office and Project Assistant, the employer Sample Studio and the dates 2023–2025.

Check

Read each sentence against the source. Combining the spreadsheet and weekly-note tasks into one bullet is supported. Adding management, budget ownership, certifications, named software or numerical improvements is not. ‘Flagged’ must not become ‘resolved’ or ‘led’.

If it differs

Point to any invented claim or changed title and ask for a replacement using only the quoted source facts. If there are more or fewer than three bullets, ask for three without dropping a relevant fact or adding an achievement.

03

Find unsupported upgrades

Watch for verbs that inflate responsibility, such as changing “helped” into “led” or “flagged” into “resolved.”

Your starting prompt
Audit each claim in the draft against the source CV. Quote the supporting source phrase. Flag changes that increase responsibility, imply a result, invent a tool or add an unsupported level of expertise. Correct those claims and keep unmet job requirements in a separate private review list.
Expect

A claim-by-claim audit with source wording, a corrected excerpt and a separate list of unmet or unevidenced requirements. That review list is for checking, not an experience claim.

Check

Check that the audit also covers the profile, not just the bullets. ‘Prepared weekly project status notes’ does not establish that the person managed projects, owned their outcomes or improved performance.

If it differs

For any claim with no matching phrase, ask the AI to remove or narrow it and return the corrected excerpt. Do not supply an invented example just to close an evidence gap.

04

Check the excerpt as its owner

You should be able to explain every bullet with a real example. Human confirmation comes before an application.

Your starting prompt
Return the corrected CV excerpt and a short checklist of facts I must personally verify. Suggest questions that could uncover relevant real experience, but do not fill in answers. Do not submit an application or claim the wording will pass an automated hiring system.
Expect

The corrected excerpt and questions for the owner to verify, such as whether any dedicated project-management software was actually used. You may copy the checked excerpt into your document editor as a practice draft.

Check

Recheck the exact title, employer, dates and three bullets yourself. This fictional excerpt is not your work history. In a real adaptation, you must be able to explain each claim with a true example before applying. No application or automated-hiring-system result has occurred.

If it differs

If a question is answered on your behalf or the reply promises screening success, ask it to leave that answer open and remove the promise. Save a corrected copy only after checking it against the source.

Optional: improve the result

Build an evidence bank for later applications

Maintain a private list of real tasks, examples and verified outcomes. Update it yourself as experience grows.

Advanced prompt
Turn this verified experience into an evidence bank with fields: source role, exact fact, relevant skills, supporting example if supplied, and limits on the claim. Leave missing outcomes blank. For a new job description, select matching evidence before drafting. Never reuse a claim from a previous draft unless the evidence bank supports it.

VERIFIED EXPERIENCE:
[paste]
Optional: use your own input

Tailor a safe excerpt from your own experience

Start a new chat. Use a short, non-sensitive experience excerpt you are allowed to share, with contact details, names and confidential work removed or replaced by consistent role and employer labels. Keep any private original locally. Fill every placeholder below. After checking the evidence map, send these messages one at a time, checking each reply:
“Write my requested profile and number of bullets using only supported facts. Keep my supplied titles, employer labels, dates and responsibility level exact.”
“Audit every claim, including the profile, against my source. Quote support, correct inflated wording and keep unevidenced requirements in a separate review list.”
“Return the corrected excerpt plus facts I must personally verify. Ask questions about missing true experience without answering them. Do not submit anything or promise screening success.”
Check every claim before copying the draft into your own document. Replace anonymized labels locally only with verified details. The original advanced extension stays sample-scoped unless you replace its input with your own verified evidence; do not reuse fictional experience as yours.

Your own-input prompt
Compare my experience excerpt with this job description. First list each stated requirement and quote matching experience, or mark it not evidenced. Distinguish direct support from a possible transferable connection. Do not draft the CV yet. In later messages we will write the requested excerpt, audit each claim and prepare a human-check list. Keep exact supplied role titles, employer labels and dates; do not add tools, qualifications, responsibilities, results or metrics. The employer's requirements are not evidence about me. Use only the supplied material and flag conflicts or missing information. Return written text only; do not access accounts, contact anyone or submit an application.

EXPERIENCE EXCERPT
[Paste permitted, non-sensitive tasks and verified outcomes, with consistent role/employer labels and dates. Mark unknown outcomes and limits.]

JOB DESCRIPTION
[Paste the relevant full job description without unnecessary contact details.]

REQUESTED EXCERPT
[State the desired profile length and number of experience bullets.]

Check your own result

  • Each claim maps to your actual source, including the profile; desired skills in the advert do not become claimed experience.
  • Your supplied labels, dates, bullet count and responsibility level are preserved together. Fictional sample names, years and achievements are absent.
  • Unsupported metrics, tools, qualifications and outcomes stay out; unanswered questions remain questions.
  • You can explain every final claim truthfully. Saving a draft is separate from reviewing and submitting an application.

You’re the final check

Check the worked example.

These checks use the worked example and its particular facts. With your own material, check your actual names, numbers, sources and rules; do not reuse the sample’s values as the answer.

Unsaved checks stay in this tab and reset when you reload. If you choose Save guide, its current example checkmarks are kept in this browser when storage is available.

A few things to watch for.

  • Copying job-description keywords that describe experience you do not have.
  • Adding percentages or inflated job titles to make an ordinary task sound impressive.
