Make a start
One step at a time.
3 steps
Start with the synthetic worked example or other non-sensitive inputs. Run one prompt at a time in your chosen AI tool. Replace any bracketed placeholders with the requested material, check each reply, and supply the source or earlier outputs that step needs. Paste them again if the tool lacks that context.
Start with the synthetic example, then adapt each prompt to your task.
01
Open a text assistant and try the example
For a concrete starter route, open https://chatgpt.com and choose New chat. Sign in if that service requires it for your access. You can also use another text assistant you already have. Copy the entire prompt below (the instructions to paste), including the sample input, into its message box and send it. No upload or image generation is needed. Expect five connected plot beats. The wording may differ from the example; the constraints should not. If it only explains the task, ask it to produce the finished result using the supplied input.
Your starting prompt
Rewrite the outline as five numbered beats (important story moments). For each beat, include the event and a sentence beginning “Because” linking it to the next event, except for the final resolution. Preserve the supplied destination and ending. Remove the two prohibited coincidences.
Use this complete made-up practice input:
Original outline:
1. Mira wants to reopen an abandoned observatory.
2. A stranger happens to hand her its missing key.
3. She goes inside and randomly discovers a perfect replacement lens.
4. She repairs the telescope.
5. She opens the roof for a public viewing.
Available facts: Mira has a maintenance notebook from the observatory. It says a spare key is kept in a locked box at the town workshop; the workshop keeper can lend the box key after checking the notebook's inventory number. The telescope's original lens is dusty but intact. Mira knows only the basic cleaning method described in the notebook.
Rules: No stranger giving a key, no replacement lens appearing, no new expert rescuer. End with the roof open for a viewing. This is a fictional plot outline, not real telescope-cleaning advice.
Return the finished result. Keep it fictional and do not add claims about real people, products or events.
02
Check, correct and save
Read the response beside the original input. Count five beats and four explicit “Because” links. Trace both keys through the notebook, keeper and workshop box. Confirm the original lens stays intact and no new rescuer or replacement lens appears. If a check fails, paste the correction prompt below in the same conversation. Check the revised result yourself, then copy the version you want into your own notes or document.
Your starting prompt
Check your previous result against this original input:
Check these requirements one by one:
- Count five beats and four explicit “Because” links.
- Trace both keys through the notebook, keeper and workshop box.
- Confirm the original lens stays intact and no new rescuer or replacement lens appears.
Quote each problem, explain the smallest repair, and return a complete corrected version. If there is no problem, say which checks you applied. Do not claim that your own review proves quality or audience response.
03
Optional: use your own material
Open a new chat. Copy the prompt below and replace [PASTE YOUR INPUT HERE] with outline, required events, destination, ending and forbidden shortcuts. Use material you own or may use and leave out private details. The output limits written in this prompt stay in force; change a limit here too if you want a different one. Send the whole message. Expect the same kind of written result with your new material. Check it against this new input and these limits, not the sample’s names or numbers. If it differs, describe the exact mismatch and ask for a complete correction before saving.
Your starting prompt
Repair the cause-and-effect links in my fictional outline below. Keep the required events, destination and ending; remove the shortcuts I prohibit. Use numbered story moments. For every moment except the ending, add a Because sentence linking it to the next. Do not solve a gap with a new coincidence.
If an essential detail is missing or two requirements conflict, ask me before filling the gap.
MY INPUT

Optional: improve the result
Add a meaningful setback
Give the character an obstacle that requires a choice rather than a new lucky event. Keep the first version so you can compare the change. This extension uses the worked example. Return to that example chat, or paste its input and your checked example answer into a new chat first. Do not apply its sample values unchanged to your own input.
Advanced prompt
Add one setback between beats 3 and 4: Mira has time to clean either the telescope or the visitors’ benches before dusk, but not both. Revise the five beats so her choice matters and the roof still opens. Do not invent a helper or supplies.
Use the original input and result in this conversation. If either is missing, ask me to paste it before continuing.
Show, then try

This input is synthetic. The output is a written illustration of the intended result, not a verified AI-tool run.
01 / The starting point
Synthetic input
Made-up example for practice. All people, places and events are invented.
Copies text only. For image or file tasks, use the source files named in the steps too.
Worked example written for this guide; it is not a recording of an AI run.
1. Mira reads the maintenance notebook and finds the workshop box entry and its inventory number. Because she now has a specific lead, she takes the notebook to the workshop keeper.
2. The keeper matches the inventory number and lends her the box key; Mira retrieves the observatory's spare key. Because she deliberately followed the recorded storage procedure, she can enter the building.
3. Inside, she checks the telescope against the notebook and sees that the original lens is dusty but intact. Because the damage she feared is absent, she can attempt the limited cleaning method she already has.
4. Mira follows the notebook's basic cleaning instructions and checks that the telescope can be pointed through the roof opening. Because the original equipment is usable, she can prepare the observatory for visitors.
5. Mira opens the roof for the public viewing. Her search through the records and her modest repair have made the opening possible; no replacement lens or surprise rescuer was needed.
These checks use the worked example and its particular facts. With your own material, check your actual names, numbers, sources and rules; do not reuse the sample’s values as the answer.
Unsaved checks stay in this tab and reset when you reload. If you choose Save guide, its current example checkmarks are kept in this browser when storage is available.

A few things to watch for.
Replacing one coincidence with an invented expert preserves the problem. Require each solution to use an available fact.
A causal outline can still lack tension. First fix the chain; add obstacles only if they do not contradict it.
