What you’re working towards

Allocate remaining pages to actual reading windows and expose a no-fit rather than invent time. The worked result is a written example for practice; the AI steps have not been tested.

Make a start

One step at a time.

3 steps

Start with the synthetic worked example or other non-sensitive inputs. Run one prompt at a time in your chosen AI tool. Replace any bracketed placeholders with the requested material, check each reply, and supply the source or earlier outputs that step needs. Paste them again if the tool lacks that context.

Start with the synthetic example, then adapt each prompt to your task.

01

Open a chat and paste the example

Open https://chatgpt.com and choose New chat. Copy every line under Input in this guide into the message box. Then add the prompt below (the instructions telling the assistant what to do) and send both together. Expect a written response shaped like the example under Output. The wording may differ. If the assistant asks for information already in the input, point to that line; if a necessary fact is missing, keep it unknown rather than guessing.

Your starting prompt
Use the complete reading input above to calculate remaining pages, capacity and a Tuesday–Thursday page plan. Distribute pages approximately in proportion to available time and explain whole-page rounding. Include exact inclusive page ranges and estimated minutes. Keep Friday empty and distinguish the estimated rate from a guarantee.
02

Check the specific result

Check that the first unread page is 151, not 150. Count inclusive ranges as end minus start plus one. The targets must total 90 pages, fit each window at the supplied rate, and end at page 240. Compare it with the Input yourself. If the response fails a check, paste the correction prompt below into the same chat. Recheck the corrected version before saving it.

Your starting prompt
Recalculate the inclusive page counts and minutes in your plan using 2 pages per minute. Check all three windows and preserve Friday as unavailable. Correct any missing, repeated or already-read page.
03

Try it with your own example

Open a new chat. Copy the prompt below, then replace [PASTE YOUR INPUT HERE] with your own non-sensitive facts and rules. Include the kinds of details listed under Requirements. Send the whole message. Expect the same kind of result as this guide, using your values. Compare every name, number and rule with your input. If something differs, point to the exact mismatch and ask for a corrected complete answer. Save only a version you have checked.

Your starting prompt
Use my page count, last completed page, estimated reading rate, available dates and time windows below. Calculate remaining pages and capacity, then give inclusive whole-page ranges that fit the permitted dates. Explain rounding and flag insufficient time. Keep unavailable dates empty and treat the reading rate as an estimate, not a guarantee.

Use only the new input below. If a fact needed to finish is missing, ask me for it before choosing an answer.

Optional: improve the result

Revise after a slower session

Update the plan from actual progress instead of treating the original pace as certain. This extension uses the worked example. Return to that example chat, or paste its input and your checked example answer into a new chat first. Do not apply its sample values unchanged to your own input.

Advanced prompt
After Tuesday, I finished only through page 170. Wednesday and Thursday windows are unchanged. Recalculate the remaining pages and whether the book still fits at the original estimated rate of 2 pages per minute. If it fits, give new ranges; if not, state the shortfall without inventing extra time.
Show, then try

This input is synthetic. The output is a written illustration of the intended result, not a verified AI-tool run.

The starting point

Synthetic input
Made-up example for practice.

Made-up reading plan. The book has 240 pages; page 150 is fully finished, so reading starts at page 151. The return date is Friday, and no reading time is available on Friday. Remaining windows: Tuesday 20 minutes, Wednesday 25 minutes, Thursday 15 minutes. Use the reader’s planning rate of 2 pages per minute, which is an estimate. Prefer spreading reading evenly by proportion of available time; whole-page targets only. Do not schedule a return or claim a renewal is available.

Copies text only. For image or file tasks, use the source files named in the steps too.

The intended result

Illustrative output
Written example for practice; not a recorded AI response.

Pages remaining: 240 − 150 = 90.
Available time: 20 + 25 + 15 = 60 minutes.
Estimated time required: 90 ÷ 2 = 45 minutes. Planned spare time: 15 minutes.
Proportional targets
Tuesday: pages 151–180, 30 pages, about 15 minutes; 5-minute spare window.
Wednesday: pages 181–218, 38 pages, about 19 minutes; 6-minute spare window.
Thursday: pages 219–240, 22 pages, about 11 minutes; 4-minute spare window.
The unrounded targets were 30, 37.5 and 22.5 pages. The tie was resolved by placing the extra page in the longer Wednesday window.
Total: 30 + 38 + 22 = 90 pages, with no gaps or overlap. No reading is assigned to Friday. Actual pace may differ.

You’re the final check

Check the worked example.

These checks use the worked example and its particular facts. With your own material, check your actual names, numbers, sources and rules; do not reuse the sample’s values as the answer.

Unsaved checks stay in this tab and reset when you reload. If you choose Save guide, its current example checkmarks are kept in this browser when storage is available.

A few things to watch for.

  • A measured or estimated reading pace can vary with difficulty. Keep spare time and revise using actual progress.
  • A return date is not permission or evidence for renewal, and this plan does not change a library account.
