What you’re working towards

Classify supplied cases using a fixed definition, including a tempting near-miss and an unknown case. The worked result is a written example for practice; the AI steps have not been tested.

Make a start

One step at a time.

3 steps

Start with the synthetic worked example or other non-sensitive inputs. Run one prompt at a time in your chosen AI tool. Replace any bracketed placeholders with the requested material, check each reply, and supply the source or earlier outputs that step needs. Paste them again if the tool lacks that context.

Start with the synthetic example, then adapt each prompt to your task.

01

Open a chat and paste the example

Open https://chatgpt.com and choose New chat. Copy every line under Input in this guide into the message box. Then add the prompt below (the instructions telling the assistant what to do) and send both together. Expect a written response shaped like the example under Output. The wording may differ. If the assistant asks for information already in the input, point to that line; if a necessary fact is missing, keep it unknown rather than guessing.

Your starting prompt
Apply the exact triangle definition above to cases A–F. Put each case in Fits, Does not fit or Not enough information and cite the deciding feature. Preserve missing information and do not import an equal-sides requirement. Give category totals.
02

Check the specific result

Check A and F fit; B, C and D fail different named properties; E stays unknown. Count six cases and do not treat unequal sides as disqualifying. Compare it with the Input yourself. If the response fails a check, paste the correction prompt below into the same chat. Recheck the corrected version before saving it.

Your starting prompt
Recheck every case against only the four supplied properties: closed, flat, exactly three sides, all straight. Remove any extra equal-length requirement and preserve E as insufficient information. Recalculate category totals.
03

Try it with your own example

Open a new chat. Copy the prompt below, then replace [PASTE YOUR INPUT HERE] with your own non-sensitive facts and rules. Include the kinds of details listed under Requirements. Send the whole message. Expect the same kind of result as this guide, using your values. Compare every name, number and rule with your input. If something differs, point to the exact mismatch and ask for a corrected complete answer. Save only a version you have checked.

Your starting prompt
Use only my definition below to classify every supplied case as Fits, Does not fit or Not enough information. Preserve each case label and cite its deciding feature. Do not add requirements to my definition or guess missing facts. Give totals for the three groups.

Use only the new input below. If a fact needed to finish is missing, ask me for it before choosing an answer.

MY INPUT

Optional: improve the result

Generate one precise near-miss

Ask for a new case that fails exactly one part of the definition, then identify that part yourself. This extension uses the worked example. Return to that example chat, or paste its input and your checked example answer into a new chat first. Do not apply its sample values unchanged to your own input.

Advanced prompt
Create one new text-described flat figure that fails exactly one requirement of the supplied triangle definition. Do not reveal the classification or failed requirement yet. Ask me to identify it, then wait.
Show, then try

See the shape of the result.

This input is synthetic. The output is a written illustration of the intended result, not a verified AI-tool run.

The starting point

Synthetic input
Made-up example for practice.

Made-up classification exercise. Supplied definition: a triangle is a closed flat figure with exactly three straight sides. Judge only from these descriptions; no pictures are supplied. A: closed, flat, three straight sides. B: closed, flat, four straight sides. C: open, flat, three straight segments. D: closed, flat, three sides, one curved. E: closed, flat, three sides, but whether the sides are straight is not stated. F: closed, flat, three straight sides of unequal lengths. Task: classify each as Fits, Does not fit or Not enough information, and identify the exact defining feature used. Do not add a rule that all sides must be equal.

Copies text only. For image or file tasks, use the source files named in the steps too.

The intended result

Illustrative output
Written example for practice; not a recorded AI response.

A — Fits: closed, flat and exactly three straight sides.
B — Does not fit: four sides rather than three.
C — Does not fit: the figure is open rather than closed.
D — Does not fit: one side is curved rather than straight.
E — Not enough information: whether all three sides are straight is unknown.
F — Fits: unequal lengths do not violate the supplied definition.
Count: 2 Fits, 3 Does not fit, 1 Not enough information.
Boundary lesson: a triangle need not have equal sides, but it must meet every property in the supplied definition. Unknown is different from failing a property.

You’re the final check

Check the worked example.

These checks use the worked example and its particular facts. With your own material, check your actual names, numbers, sources and rules; do not reuse the sample’s values as the answer.

Unsaved checks stay in this tab and reset when you reload. If you choose Save guide, its current example checkmarks are kept in this browser when storage is available.

A few things to watch for.

  • Examples that look familiar can tempt an assistant to add unstated properties. Anchor the task to the supplied definition.
  • Do not convert an unknown feature into a false one just to force a yes/no answer.
