Make a start

One step at a time.

3 steps

Start with the synthetic worked example or other non-sensitive inputs. Run one prompt at a time in your chosen AI tool. Replace any bracketed placeholders with the requested material, check each reply, and supply the source or earlier outputs that step needs. Paste them again if the tool lacks that context.

Start with the synthetic example, then adapt each prompt to your task.

01

Open a text assistant and try the example

For a concrete starter route, open https://chatgpt.com and choose New chat. Sign in if that service requires it for your access. You can also use another text assistant you already have. Copy the entire prompt below (the instructions to paste), including the sample input, into its message box and send it. No upload or image generation is needed. Expect a costume concept with front/back descriptions and character reasons. The wording may differ from the example; the constraints should not. If it only explains the task, ask it to produce the finished result using the supplied input.

Your starting prompt
Write a costume concept brief, not a sewing pattern. Include silhouette, layers, pockets, wear marks, palette and three character-linked reasons. Respect the practical exclusions and avoid historical authenticity claims. Add a front/back description an illustrator could use.

Use this complete made-up practice input:
Original character: Adult map archivist Tavi in an invented canal city.
Character facts: Carries rolled paper maps, works at a desk, travels between buildings on foot, carefully repairs belongings instead of replacing them.
Visual goal: Patient, practical and a little eccentric.
Allowed materials as fictional visual descriptions: matte cotton, soft wool, leather-looking straps. No real material sourcing or construction advice.
Constraints: No weapons, armor, long trailing fabric, dangling pieces near the feet, huge shoulder shapes or logos. Hands and feet remain unobstructed.
Palette: Slate blue, parchment cream and small burnt-orange repair stitches.
Deliverable: A written illustration/costume brief only.

Return the finished result. Keep it fictional and do not add claims about real people, products or events.
02

Check, correct and save

Read the response beside the original input. Link every major detail to a supplied character fact or visual goal. Check hands and feet are unobstructed and excluded items are absent. Confirm front and back descriptions agree on storage and repairs. If a check fails, paste the correction prompt below in the same conversation. Check the revised result yourself, then copy the version you want into your own notes or document.

Your starting prompt
Check your previous result against this original input:
Original character: Adult map archivist Tavi in an invented canal city.
Character facts: Carries rolled paper maps, works at a desk, travels between buildings on foot, carefully repairs belongings instead of replacing them.
Visual goal: Patient, practical and a little eccentric.
Allowed materials as fictional visual descriptions: matte cotton, soft wool, leather-looking straps. No real material sourcing or construction advice.
Constraints: No weapons, armor, long trailing fabric, dangling pieces near the feet, huge shoulder shapes or logos. Hands and feet remain unobstructed.
Palette: Slate blue, parchment cream and small burnt-orange repair stitches.
Deliverable: A written illustration/costume brief only.

Check these requirements one by one:
- Link every major detail to a supplied character fact or visual goal.
- Check hands and feet are unobstructed and excluded items are absent.
- Confirm front and back descriptions agree on storage and repairs.
Quote each problem, explain the smallest repair, and return a complete corrected version. If there is no problem, say which checks you applied. Do not claim that your own review proves quality or audience response.

Optional: use your own material

Open a new chat. Copy the prompt below and replace [PASTE YOUR INPUT HERE] with fictional character, role, climate, practical constraints, materials and exclusions. Use material you own or may use and leave out private details. The output limits written in this prompt stay in force; change a limit here too if you want a different one. Send the whole message. Expect the same kind of written result with your new material. Check it against this new input and these limits, not the sample’s names or numbers. If it differs, describe the exact mismatch and ask for a complete correction before saving.

Your starting prompt
Write a costume concept brief from my facts below, with silhouette, layers, pockets, wear marks, palette, three character-linked reasons and matching front/back descriptions. This is for an illustrator, not a sewing pattern. Do not invent fit, safety or historical-authenticity guarantees.

If an essential detail is missing or two requirements conflict, ask me before filling the gap.

MY INPUT

Optional: improve the result

Show the same costume in action

Test whether the visual design survives the character’s ordinary movements. Keep the first version so you can compare the change. This extension uses the worked example. Return to that example chat, or paste its input and your checked example answer into a new chat first. Do not apply its sample values unchanged to your own input.

Advanced prompt
Describe Tavi seated at a desk and walking with a rolled map. Identify any costume detail that could become awkward and propose a visual adjustment while preserving the silhouette, palette and no-trailing-fabric rule. Do not claim real fit testing.
Use the original input and result in this conversation. If either is missing, ask me to paste it before continuing.
Show, then try

This input is synthetic. The output is a written illustration of the intended result, not a verified AI-tool run.

The starting point

Synthetic input
Made-up example for practice. All people, places and events are invented.

Original character: Adult map archivist Tavi in an invented canal city.
Character facts: Carries rolled paper maps, works at a desk, travels between buildings on foot, carefully repairs belongings instead of replacing them.
Visual goal: Patient, practical and a little eccentric.
Allowed materials as fictional visual descriptions: matte cotton, soft wool, leather-looking straps. No real material sourcing or construction advice.
Constraints: No weapons, armor, long trailing fabric, dangling pieces near the feet, huge shoulder shapes or logos. Hands and feet remain unobstructed.
Palette: Slate blue, parchment cream and small burnt-orange repair stitches.
Deliverable: A written illustration/costume brief only.

Copies text only. For image or file tasks, use the source files named in the steps too.

The intended result

Illustrative output
Worked example written for this guide; it is not a recording of an AI run.

Costume concept: Tavi, map archivist

Silhouette: A narrow, easy-to-read outline with a knee-length slate-blue coat and straight trousers. Nothing trails at the ankles or widens the shoulders dramatically.
Layers: A parchment-cream shirt beneath a soft-looking slate wool vest. The coat has matte cotton texture and sleeves ending above the hands.
Storage: A close-fitting vertical map sleeve sits against the upper back, attached by short leather-looking straps. A flat notebook pocket sits at the chest; small waist pockets stay close to the body.
Wear: One elbow patch and a repaired coat seam use restrained burnt-orange stitches. Keep wear specific and cared for, not generally ragged.
Palette: Slate blue dominates, cream frames the face and hands, orange appears only in repairs.

Character reasons:
1. The back map sleeve supports carrying rolled documents without a huge bag obscuring the silhouette.
2. Flat front pockets and unobstructed hands suit desk work.
3. Visible careful repairs express Tavi's habit of maintaining possessions.

Front view for an illustrator: Show the cream collar, flat chest pocket, short straps and neat orange repair at one coat seam. Keep hands, trouser hems and shoes clearly visible.
Back view: Show the close-fitting map sleeve, a rolled paper edge at shoulder height and the repaired elbow. No long loose straps or trailing fabric.

This is an invented visual concept. Fit, comfort, material suitability and actual construction would need separate work if someone made the costume.

You’re the final check

Check the worked example.

These checks use the worked example and its particular facts. With your own material, check your actual names, numbers, sources and rules; do not reuse the sample’s values as the answer.

Unsaved checks stay in this tab and reset when you reload. If you choose Save guide, its current example checkmarks are kept in this browser when storage is available.

A few things to watch for.

  • Pockets and straps can become decorative clutter. Keep only details that explain the character or carry a needed object.
  • An illustration brief does not establish real garment safety, fit or construction feasibility. Keep those as later checks.
