What you’re working towards

Make a tighter scene while keeping specified actions and the ending intact. The worked result was written for this guide; it is not a recording of an AI run.

Make a start

One step at a time.

3 steps

Start with the synthetic worked example or other non-sensitive inputs. Run one prompt at a time in your chosen AI tool. Replace any bracketed placeholders with the requested material, check each reply, and supply the source or earlier outputs that step needs. Paste them again if the tool lacks that context.

Start with the synthetic example, then adapt each prompt to your task.

01

Open a text assistant and try the example

For a concrete starter route, open https://chatgpt.com and choose New chat. Sign in if that service requires it for your access. You can also use another text assistant you already have. Copy the entire prompt below (the instructions to paste), including the sample input, into its message box and send it. No upload or image generation is needed. Expect a 70–95-word scene and a five-item beat check. The wording may differ from the example; the constraints should not. If it only explains the task, ask it to produce the finished result using the supplied input.

Your starting prompt
Rewrite the source in 70–95 words. Preserve all five required beats (important story moments) in their original order and keep the two quoted dialogue lines exactly. Remove repetition rather than adding events. Follow with a five-item beat check.

Use this complete made-up practice input:
Source: Pavel stood outside the rehearsal room for what felt like a very long time. He had come to return a borrowed trumpet, which he held in its battered case. He shifted the case from one hand to the other, and then shifted it back again. He could hear no music. The silence inside the room was complete. He knocked twice on the door, two small knocks. “Come in,” June said from inside. Pavel opened the door and saw her sitting beside an empty music stand. He put the case on the table, taking care to set it down gently and not with a thump. “I kept it longer than I said,” he told her. June pushed the empty music stand toward him. Pavel did not leave. He opened the case.
Required beats: Pavel waits outside with the borrowed trumpet; knocks twice; enters after June says “Come in”; puts the case down and admits “I kept it longer than I said”; June offers the stand and Pavel opens the case.
Keep the outcome implicit: do not add forgiveness, an argument or a performance.

Return the finished result. Keep it fictional and do not add claims about real people, products or events.
02

Check, correct and save

Read the response beside the original input. Count 70–95 scene words, excluding the beat check. Compare both quoted lines character for character with the input. Find the five required beats in order and check that no explicit reconciliation was added. If a check fails, paste the correction prompt below in the same conversation. Check the revised result yourself, then copy the version you want into your own notes or document.

Your starting prompt
Check your previous result against this original input:

Check these requirements one by one:
- Count 70–95 scene words, excluding the beat check.
- Compare both quoted lines character for character with the input.
- Find the five required beats in order and check that no explicit reconciliation was added.
Quote each problem, explain the smallest repair, and return a complete corrected version. If there is no problem, say which checks you applied. Do not claim that your own review proves quality or audience response.

Optional: use your own material

Open a new chat. Copy the prompt below and replace [PASTE YOUR INPUT HERE] with original scene, required story moments in order and dialogue that must remain exact. Use material you own or may use and leave out private details. The output limits written in this prompt stay in force; change a limit here too if you want a different one. Send the whole message. Expect the same kind of written result with your new material. Check it against this new input and these limits, not the sample’s names or numbers. If it differs, describe the exact mismatch and ask for a complete correction before saving.

Your starting prompt
Shorten my fictional scene to 70–95 words. Preserve all listed important story moments in their original order and every dialogue line I mark exact. Remove repetition rather than adding events. Follow with a check of each required moment.

If an essential detail is missing or two requirements conflict, ask me before filling the gap.

Optional: improve the result

Compare two kinds of compression

Try a more spare version without reducing the required event content. Keep the first version so you can compare the change. This extension uses the worked example. Return to that example chat, or paste its input and your checked example answer into a new chat first. Do not apply its sample values unchanged to your own input.

Advanced prompt
Produce another 70–95-word version that uses fewer descriptive modifiers and more physical actions. Preserve the five beats and exact dialogue. Compare the two versions in terms of pace and emotional distance.
Use the original input and result in this conversation. If either is missing, ask me to paste it before continuing.

Made-up example for practice. All people, places and events are invented.

The intended result

Illustrative output
Worked example written for this guide; it is not a recording of an AI run.

Pavel waited outside the rehearsal room, shifting the borrowed trumpet's battered case between his hands. No music came through the door. He knocked twice.

“Come in,” June said.

She sat beside an empty music stand. Pavel entered and set the case carefully on the table.

“I kept it longer than I said,” he told her.

June pushed the stand toward him. Pavel kept his hand on the case for a moment. Then he opened it.

Beat check:
1. Waits outside with the borrowed trumpet: retained.
2. Knocks twice: retained.
3. Enters after “Come in”: retained.
4. Sets down the case and makes the exact admission: retained.
5. June pushes the stand toward him; Pavel opens the case: retained.

You’re the final check

Check the worked example.

These checks use the worked example and its particular facts. With your own material, check your actual names, numbers, sources and rules; do not reuse the sample’s values as the answer.

Unsaved checks stay in this tab and reset when you reload. If you choose Save guide, its current example checkmarks are kept in this browser when storage is available.

A few things to watch for.

  • Cutting every pause can remove the scene’s tension. Keep one purposeful hesitation instead of several repeated ones.
  • A neat explanation of what the ending means would change its intended ambiguity. Leave the meaning implicit.
