What happened
Mistral announced Large 4 on October 6, 2026. The multimodal model is available as an API preview through Mistral Studio. Its documentation specifies 1.05 trillion total parameters and 52 billion active parameters.
The company says downloadable weights will follow by the end of October 2026. That is a release plan, not confirmation that weights are already available. Its announcement already cites independent evaluations alongside company tests; benchmark results should be read with their methods and conditions.
What remains conditional
Mistral connects the release to its €3 billion Series D. Its separate funding announcement gives a post-money valuation above €21 billion and names Samsung Electronics as the lead investor.
Open weights may offer additional deployment choices, but practical self-hosting will depend on the released license, infrastructure and operating requirements. They do not by themselves establish regulatory compliance.
What to do with this
Editorial suggestion: Compare the preview with your current model using the same non-sensitive tasks and success criteria. Record failures, latency and total cost. Keep any self-hosting decision separate until the actual weights and license can be reviewed.
